Judging quality
Whole spices should look glossy rather than dusty and smell strongly when rubbed between the fingers. Wooden pieces should feel dense, with tight joints and a finish that does not mark under a fingernail. Ask what something is made from and where it was assembled; a good seller will answer plainly.
Packing
Keep spices sealed and, ideally, inside a rigid box in checked baggage. Ground spices are more prone to leaking and to losing aroma. Wrap wood in cloth rather than plastic so it does not sweat.

Food, spice, plant and other natural products may be subject to import regulations in your destination country. Rules vary considerably, and it is always worth checking your own country's customs guidance before travelling or ordering.
