Zanzibar rewards travellers who buy slowly. The island's best souvenirs are the ones you use at home long after the trip: spices you cook with, wood you keep on a shelf, cloth you actually wear.
Zanzibar's reputation is built on spice, and a well-packed spice gift is the souvenir most likely to be enjoyed rather than stored. Look for whole spices where possible — cloves, cinnamon quills, cardamom pods, nutmeg and vanilla keep their aromatic oils far longer than ground powders.
Presentation matters more than most travellers expect. Loose paper bags leak, absorb moisture and rarely survive a long-haul flight. Sealed packaging inside a rigid box is the difference between a memory and a mess.
Carved wooden pieces — boxes, serving spoons, small chests — echo the door frames and shutters of Stone Town. A wooden box has the advantage of being both the souvenir and the packaging for everything else you bring back.
Kanga and kitenge cloth are inexpensive, light to pack and genuinely useful as throws, wraps or table linen. Choose designs you would be happy to see at home in ordinary daylight, not only in island sunshine.
