Mistrust superlatives

- Ask where it was made and who made it. Look for the small irregularities of handwork rather than perfect uniformity at a low price, and be sceptical of claims about age, rarity or health effects.
- Are all ZAWADI products made in Zanzibar?
- Our wooden boxes are prepared in Zanzibar and every gift is packed, personalised and finished on the island. Where an item in a hamper is sourced from mainland Tanzania or elsewhere, we say so rather than implying island origin.
- Do you make health claims about your spices?
- No. We describe aroma, flavour, culinary use and heritage only. We do not make medical or health claims.
