Authenticity

Authentic Zanzibar Gifts, Honestly Described

Authenticity is a claim, and claims should be checkable. Our boxes are prepared in Zanzibar to order, filled and finished by hand on the island. Where something in a hamper comes from mainland Tanzania or further afield, we say so.

Four Ways To Check Before You Buy

Ask two questions

Where was this made, and who made it? A seller working with local craftspeople answers specifically and quickly.

Read the finish

Handwork shows consistent small irregularities — tool marks inside a lid, grain running continuously across a piece.

Check the packaging

Sealed, labelled spice packaging says the seller expects the product to travel and to be used, not just photographed.

Mistrust superlatives

Claims about rarity, age or wellbeing benefits are rarely supportable. Honest sellers say plainly what they do not know.

Questions

Good To Know

How do I know a Zanzibar souvenir is genuine?
Ask where it was made and who made it. Look for the small irregularities of handwork rather than perfect uniformity at a low price, and be sceptical of claims about age, rarity or health effects.
Are all ZAWADI products made in Zanzibar?
Our wooden boxes are prepared in Zanzibar and every gift is packed, personalised and finished on the island. Where an item in a hamper is sourced from mainland Tanzania or elsewhere, we say so rather than implying island origin.
Do you make health claims about your spices?
No. We describe aroma, flavour, culinary use and heritage only. We do not make medical or health claims.
