Authentic Zanzibar Souvenirs: What To Look For

Authenticity is a claim, and claims should be checkable. Here is how to check them without being difficult about it.

Ask two questions

Where was this made, and who made it? Sellers working with local craftspeople answer quickly and specifically. Vague answers usually mean imported stock.

Look at the finish

Handwork shows small, consistent irregularities: slight variation in carving depth, tool marks inside a lid, grain that runs continuously across a piece. Perfect uniformity at a low price usually means machine production elsewhere.

Be sceptical of superlatives

Claims about age, rarity or medicinal effect are rarely supportable. A trustworthy seller will tell you what they know and say plainly what they do not.

Our position

We only make claims we can support. Our boxes are prepared in Zanzibar to order; where an item in a hamper is sourced from mainland Tanzania or beyond, we say so rather than implying island origin.

ZAWADI prepares luxury Zanzibar gifts to order on the island and ships them worldwide. Browse the collections or commission something bespoke.
